Rescue Truth

We are so proud of our Happy Tails section. When people email us to tell us how we helped them find their irreplaceable family member, it helps us continue on this path.
However... the rescue path is not always a Happy Tail.

Zeke

Zeke was found on the side of the road with a mangled leg that had not healed properly. What surprised everyone was how sweet, adoring and loving he was despite his hardship.
With the economic downturn, donations are down and it's very difficult for rescue groups to take on cases like Zeke's, however with raving endorsements from the shelter staff on what a sweet boy he was, we couldn't resist. He was even featured on the Channel 10 news.
Zeke passed on after his surgery to amputate his leg to great heartbreak of the rescue, shelter staff and the caring vet staff. We are blessed to have known such a kind soul and know he's running free now in no pain. Thank you for all those that made a difference in this boy's life.

Gypsy

Gypsy was a stray senior Pekingese that a good samaritan brought to a local vet. The vet asked us to help find her a foster home and we knew just who to call. Susan, a local dog advocate with a soft spot for 'pekes’, welcomed this little girl into her life where she would be showered with love and much needed vet attention. Gypsy was covered in lumps, rotten teeth, and matted fur and all Susan could say was "She's PERFECT! I LOVE her!!”
After 4 short weeks, Gypsy succumb to heart disease. Our hearts go out to Susan and we thank her from the bottom of our hearts for being the best home this sweet older girl could ever know.

Abbey

Abbey is a spunky friendly aussie mix who was found tied to a guard rail where her collar had been embedded in her neck. We brought her back to Columbus to work with one of our favorite vets, Dr. Bando at VCA Sawmill. Her mistreatment didn't do much to her spirit as she wagged her tail and gave puppy kisses to the VCA staff as they tended to her wounds. She has been adopted out to a wonderful home.
Joey

Joey has become a Columbus celebrity with news coverage and all. We are sure he would prefer to be just a normal dog in a loving home.
Joey was rescued from the side of a freeway where he was thrown from a moving car when he was only about 6 weeks old. He had two reconstructive surgeres on his elbow in Feb 2008 at VCA Animal Hospital on Sawmill. We recieved dozens of applications for wonderful homes for our little trooper, but we found a family who had Jack Russell experience and were willing to continue his medical care and therapy. Thank you Donnelly family! See more pictures of Joey in our Happy Tails Section!

Peanut

In memory of Peanut Oct. 2007- Jan. 2008
Peanut was about to be put down with 5 of her siblings before Christmas. The shelter received media coverage and someone actually broke into the shelter and stole three pups, 2 of which we were on our way to rescue. Two of the other pups didn't make it through the shelter's mandatory pediatric spay. We were then left with Peanut and Nikko who brought us so much Christmas joy! Peanut got into something at her new home and one of our volunteers drove for 6 hours to return her to Columbus for much-needed care, but it was too late. We were forced to put her down humanly. This whole process left Peanut and Nikko's foster families and group devastated, but we have rallied on with support from people like Nikko's new family who provide us with updates his happy new life.

Niles and Ned

In memory of Ned & Niles December 2007 to Feb 2008
Niles, Ned and 5 other of their littermates were scheduled to be put to sleep until another rescue group stepped in. They couldn't take all 7 puppies, so Canine Collective agreed to take 3 of the young darlings. What neither rescue group realized the litter has been exposed to Parvo, a common disease that affects puppies in shelters. After intensive care at VCA both Ned & Niles succumbed to their illness. Two of the pups from the other group's litter also did not make it. Norm, the other pup did not test positive and has been adopted into a wonderful new home that you can see in our Happy Tails.

Miley, Lola, Runtly and Crew!
A local vet office contacted us about two stray spaniels which were brought in by a good samaritian who found them running on a busy downtown street. We took the two girls, Mylie and Lola into our rescue. Mylie soon gave birth to a litter of 9 puppies. Six of the puppies quickly died from an infection Mylie was passing on to her pups. The three remaining 'days old' pups needed to be bottle fed every two hours. Natalie Bollman a vet tech at Metvet came to the rescue! Waking up every two hours for weeks to feed the pups.

Thank you Natalie and all involved for these 5 Happy Tails!

We have established the PEANUT FUND to help pay for emergency vet care for the dogs and puppies in our program. Any donations are appreciated.

We also collect Coke codes. Any codes you have from 12, 24 packs or 2 liters of any Coke product we would be happy to use. Just send an email with the code to donations@caninecollective.org

Make a Difference

Please spay or neuter your pets to prevent unwanted litters. Millions of dogs die in shelters each year because there aren’t enough good homes for them.

Please
don’t buy your pet from a pet store. Pet stores use puppy brokers that buy from auctions and puppy mills. These dogs are breed purely for profit and their care and health are forfeited for the bottom line.

Keep your dog on
heartworm preventative and current on vaccinations. Parvo and heartworms are easily prevented illnesses that can kill a dog and are expensive to treat.

Adopt your next pet from a shelter or rescue organization. The love you’ll receive from a dog who knows how bad life can be, cannot be matched.
The feeling you get knowing you saved a life; Priceless.

The Canine Collective is based in Central Ohio and serves Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Fairfield, Pickaway, Madison and Union Counties.
We are a 501c3 non profit organization whose mission it is to provide sanctuary and re-home various breeds of dogs rescued from rural shelters and referrals.

All our dogs are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on shots, and temperment tested.
